Master. The vessel then made a voyage to the Celebes Islands, occupying three months, and I can conscientiously say that during the whole of the time the vessel was at sea during the voyage the Master was not sober a single day.

Whilst sailing along the coast of the Celebes Islands, the Master ran the vessel ashore twice in the same place, he being in a very aggravated state of intoxication at the time, and on another occasion, having entered the port to which we were bound, he put the vessel to sea again, being too drunk to take her into port.

On arriving at this port, I went once again to the Harbour Office to prefer a charge against the Master, but was again told the Harbour Master could do nothing to assist me. I then applied on board the flagship of the Chinese Station - H.M.S. 'Imperieuse', but the Captain said he could not assist me, it being a case for the shore Authorities.

Now the Harbour Master here, Captain Rumsey, very readily enquires into a charge when made by the Master of the ship against any of his Mates and very speedily disposes of the charge, always to the satisfaction...
